The Medieval Fortress

The Knights of St. John began building this stone stronghold in 1402. Today, the fortress grounds offer panoramic views over the Aegean Sea and central Bodrum.

Constructed using stones from the ancient Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the fortress features five prominent towers. The grounds sit on a rocky peninsula between two main harbors.

Prepare for a physical visit. The stone paths are steep and uneven, making them unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. A full walk through the castle grounds and museum takes 2 to 3 hours.
